I don't want to be a whiner, but I'm getting a little tired of coming out of class all scratched up and bleeding from people who don't bother to keep their fingernails trimmed.
It is a contact-intensive sport, people!
I like training hard and resisting the moves so that my partners can develop stronger technique. I also like it when people grab and attack me hard, for the same reason. But with untrimmed nails, this results in a lot of unnecessary scrapes and gouges.
I understand that in a street fight, your opponent may have untrimmed nails. But those will likely be the least of your worries. We don't need to get scratched up on a weekly (daily?) basis to develop good fighting skills.
Do your partner a favor and take a look at your hands before your next class...
Then kick some ass! :-)
Cheers,
A

Re: Trim them fingernails!
Thu, July 21, 2005 - 1:57 PMI got about 3" x 1/4" deep scratch near my eye from playing attacker in a choke-from-the-rear scenario. It didn't hurt at all when it happened so I just kept going. People started looking at me funny. At the end of class, the receptionist ran in with a towel and wiped a lot of blood off my face. There's a scar, but at least it's light. -
